AFROFEST 2010 – FESTIVAL LINEUP

AFROFEST is a FREE celebration of African music and culture presented by Music Africa and held annually in Queen’s Park in downtown Toronto. This year the festival takes place on the weekend of Saturday July 10th and Sunday July 11th, the final weekend of Africa’s first World Cup of soccer. Discover Africa in the heart of Toronto!

Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, with Samba Mapangala
Occidental Brothers Dance Band

The Occidental Brothers’ blend of high-energy soukous, rootsy Ghanaian Highlife and African Jazz has made them favorites of music critics and audiences alike. Their 2009 CD Odo Sanbra pays homage to Ghanaian highlife, and was selected as one of the Best Albums of the Year by noted music critic Robert Christgau.

In 2008, Occidental Brothers joined forces with East African music legend Samba Mapangala to release Obama Ubarikiwe, a tribute song to Barack Obama. It became a surprise international hit. They’ve since played numerous concerts together, and have recorded a CD set for release later this year.

Congolese singer Samba Mapangala, with his band Virunga, was for 20 years the king of the East African music scene, recording dozens of hits. Samba sings in the rhythmic style of Congolese singers, in Swahili, English and his native Lingala. NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

In the late 80’s, Zaiko split into two groups: Zaiko Langa Langa Nkolo Mboka (with Nyoka and Dindo) and Zaiko Langa Langa Familia Dei (with JP Buse, Bimi Ombale, Lengi Lenga and Ilo Pablo).

During his time with Zaiko, JP Buse recorded 12 group albums, and 3 solo albums. In 1991, he decided to emigrate to Canada and embark on a solo career.
Muna Mingole
Muna Mingole
was born in Paris. In her youth she visited the Cameroonian village of her ancestors and, enchanted, stayed there for 8 years. On moving to Canada she couldn't resist her musical calling and joined a band which soon became a sensation of Canadian World Beat music. They have performed at major festivals and, in 2002, for Queen Elizabeth during her Canadian jubilee tour.
