Tarig
Abubakar & The AfroNubians
A continental Pan African mix of rumba, soukous, Afro pop, reggae and traditional African rhythms, AfroNubians was formed in 1992 by Sudanese singer saxophonist Tarig Ahmed Abubakar. AfroNubians performed in a variety of languages including Arabic, Swahili and English, a distinctly Pan-African blend of sounds. Once coined “a veritable jukebox” of African music there is usually a serious message in the music. The common theme carried throughout most of the songs is the need for racial harmony for all people. From 1992 until late 1997 the group performed in just about every major Canadian centre. With three widely-acclaimed CDs to their credit, Tour to Africa, The Great Africans, and Hobey Laik, released in March of 1997, the AfroNubians are easily the most popular and successful band on the Toronto African music scene. A perennial winner at the Toronto African Music Awards the AfroNubians have been twice named Band of the Year, including most recently in April, 1997. In late January of 1998 Tarig Ahmed Abubakar died in tragic and unexplained accident while on a trip to his native Sudan. Tarig's spirit will remain with us always. The Afro Nubians performed
