Cheza
Cheza a Swahili word that means to dance, to play. In 1994, after living in Africa and Brazil, Paul Weber returned to Canada. His search for others who shared his love of African music resulted in Cheza, a seven-piece band. By blending the styles of Central and Southern Africa with rock and jazz influences, Cheza is breaking new ground in the world music scene. Their harvest is songs with strong choral harmonies, fluid inter playing guitars and an irresistible dance beat. Cheza provides and exciting live show, primarily performing original songs as well as traditional African tunes and favourites by artists such as Miriam Makeba (South Africa) and San Fan Thomas (Cameroon). Says Chris White, artistic director of the Ottawa Folk Festival, “Their complex world-beat rhythms are irresistible, and their harmonious vocals are enthralling.” Most songs are written by Paul Weber (vocals/guitar) and then developed and arranged by Cheza members. Christian Patterson (guitar) contributes his song-writing skills as well as a wide range of guitar styles to the Cheza sound. Sisters Stella Haybukai (vocals) and Neema Mugala (vocals), Rob Graves (percussion) and Dave Hubenig (drums) together create the intricate, hip-swaying rhythms that carry the music.
