Isaac
Akrong
An
exceptional performer of traditional dance and drumming, Isaac Akrong
hails from the Ga people of the coastal belt of Ghana. At an early age
he was immersed in the traditions of his culture. At every opportunity
he participated in traditional dances and celebrations, learning from
the experienced singers, dancers and drummers in his community.
His love of traditional music and arts led him to the University of
Ghana, School of Performing Arts where he completed an undergraduate
degree. Isaac was invited to join the Ghana National Dance Ensemble
and continued with his learning and love of traditional music performing
a multitude of different cultural dances.
Isaac came to Canada to complete a Masters programme in dance at York
University. He has completed his Masters in Dance and has enrolled in
the PhD Ethnomusicology programme in the Fall. He is also teaching part-time
at the Music Department at York University. He has been a guest dancer
with Kwasi Dunyo and Group Kekeli, and
Sankofa. Music Africa recently featured Isaac at a traditional concert
performance at the Royal Ontario Museum for African History Month celebrations.
He has a strong commitment to sharing his knowledge of traditional dance
and drumming with the world. Isaac is an active member of the youth
development organization, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and has participated
in conferences in Ireland and Scotland.
As a serious student and researcher, Isaac is determined to see Ghanaian
music and dance documented for future generations.
"My goal is to propagate the message of African culture, and explain
everything about it. When people have questions, we, as professionals
should be able to explain to them. I want to build on the knowledge
that exists so that people will understand African music and dance more."
"...As you breathe on this earth, it is time to shake what your
mamma gave you. We dance through our lives with endless joy."
Isaac
Akrong will perform on Sunday July 6th at Afrofest 2003 with a group
of traditional Ghanaian percussionists and singers.
