Nilotic Cultural Group

Nilotic Cultural Group (NCG) consists of 7 members from Uganda and Sudan. Named after the mighty River Nile which runs from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea the group sings in the many languages of the peoples of her gentle shores - Kiswahili, Acholi, Ma’di, Arabic, Luganda, Toposa, Lingala, Lotuko, etc.

NCG is trying to preserve and promote the culture of the inhabitants of the Nile through music. The group entertains audiences with skilful displays of talent on thumb pianos of various sorts (lukeme, lakambe, mbira, kalimba, a’dungu) as well as with assorted drums and shakers. Traditional dance is an important part of their presentation including the dingi-dingi, which a women’s courtship dance of Northern Uganda.

NCG has received significant publicity for some impressive shows since their formation just last year. The groups aims reach beyond just performing with regular classes offered as an educational resource to schools and other organisations. The protection of the environment is an critical issue to the group that is expressed in all their work, including environmentally friendly songs and instruments.

The group performed at AfroFest in 1997.
