The Swizzlestick Theatre

Powerful tributaries of the limpopo, the Yangtse, the Ganges and the Thames create the unique cultural confluences of the Caribbean.

The oral literature of the African Caribbean Moko Jumble (stilt-dancing spirit of the forest) involves tales of secret societies, lodges of guardians defenders and protectors of the village - performing nocturnal rites of propitiation, fire-dancing for the spirits, fortified with amulets, charms fetishes and rattles.

These traditions were long suppressed, yet reemerged (and merged) with European, Asian and other traditions to create Carnival Mas (masquerade), developed through three centuries of Trinidad Carnival and three decades of Toronto Caribana.

TSST honours the ancestral spirits of all these many traditions and draws on their songs and stories, dances and images, as inspiration for the contemporary fusion of our performance art.

The group performed at AfroFest in 2000.
