Yaw Boakye & the Highlife Stars
High Life Stars have been Toronto’s top high life band for over a decade. Leader Theo Yaw Boakye was the vocalist of Nakupenda, performing several times at the very first AfroFest in 1989. Boakye shortly thereafter put together the High Life Stars combining the talents of some of Toronto’s top Ghanaian musicians. With Boakye on vocals, former C.K. Mann band members Booker T on keyboards and Paa Joe on guitar, Bishop Okele, formerly of the Officials, on bass and Toronto’s most in demand drummer Kofi Ackah Jr., who is the son of Highlife great Jewel Ackah, the group is musically one of the tightest outfits ever to play the local scene. As Toronto’s top highlife band they backed up a long list of the greatest musicians from Ghana on visits to the city including A.B. Crenstil, Pat Thomas, Ebo Taylor and others. Recently Boakye has experienced great popularity in Ghana and his Canadian produced releases have been very successful in his homeland. Highlife Stars performed at afroFest in1992, 1993 and 1998. |
