Background:
Not to be complacent with the success of Afrofest alone, Music
Africa launched the new millennium, and our second decade, with
an educational program to carry the Afrofest traditions into schools,
thus cultivating among youth a deeper appreciation and understanding
of African culture. We do have aspirations to continue the project
in the future but have to be content to keep it on the back burner
for now.
Afrofest
in the Schools, received a grant from Mayor Mel and
Marilyn’s Awards for the Arts through the Toronto Arts Council
Foundation. A series of workshops took place at several schools
across Metro Toronto including four feature concerts. The grant
also allowed Music Africa to produce a comprehensive Teacher’s
Guide to accompany the concerts and workshops to prepare the
students for the visit by the artists and engage them in the
pre- and post- visit activities outlined in the Guide.
Project
Manager: Afrofest in the Schools was directed by
